Mechanical Engineering Internship: Developing a Micro-slip Verification Method

Introduction

ASML is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Mechanical Engineering student to join our team as an intern. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a challenging project that involves developing a micro-slip verification method.

Background Information

The Sensors Mechanics group at ASML is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, including wafer height measurement systems, broadband light sources, and projection accuracy. Part of our development portfolio are image sensors, which are located on the wafer stage and measure parameters such as position, light energy, and optical aberrations. These sensors need to be stable at sub-nanometer level, but are subject to high accelerations that can cause micro-slip.

Your Assignment

We are looking for a student who can define a test setup to simulate the micro-slip phenomenon by applying a fluctuating force on a sensor-wafer stage connection while measuring the displacement in a specific measurement device. The test setup must be able to operate under vacuum conditions and trigger the micro-slip phenomenon.

Responsibilities
  • Get familiar with the picometer measurement setup of VSL
  • Determine the building envelop for the test setup to apply forces on a mock-up sensor-wafer stage connection
  • Define a concept design for the test setup, review it with the ASML team, and make a final design including drawings
  • Build a prototype test setup and verify its proper operation in the measurement setup of VSL
  • Conduct a first set of measurements to demonstrate the functionality of the setup
  • Report on your activities and achievements
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with a focus on precision engineering and/or mechatronics
  • Good communication skills in English (verbal and written)
  • Prepared to travel between Eindhoven and Delft for cross collaboration
  • Solution-oriented and hands-on mentality
