Mechanical Engineering Internship: Glue Drift Analysis

Background Overview
The Sensors Mechanics team, part of the Mechanical Development cluster, focuses on designing advanced optical sensor systems, including wafer height measurement and imaging sensors. A significant aspect of our portfolio involves image sensors that are positioned atop the wafer stage to measure critical parameters such as the focal plane position of projection lenses, light energy, optical aberrations, and stage positioning relative to a reference point. These sensors utilize a camera or sensor shielded by a glass plate with optical markers, which is affixed to the sensor housing using a two-component epoxy. The stability of this adhesive connection is crucial over time, as any deviation can adversely affect the quality of our customers' integrated circuits. A key challenge to this stability is the outgassing that occurs when the adhesive is subjected to the vacuum environment within our scanners. Given the limited in-scanner testing time, there is a pressing need for an offline platform to evaluate potential enhancements.
Your Responsibilities
Your primary task will be to establish and execute experiments aimed at investigating and enhancing the drift associated with certain performance-critical adhesive connections. You will have access to various setups at ASML and other locations, and it will be your responsibility to identify the most suitable options and how to utilize them effectively. Key considerations will include:
- Assessing the accuracy of the instruments.
- Selecting appropriate samples and ensuring stable support.
- Processing results and presenting them in a clear and meaningful manner.
In addition to the measurement aspect, you will need to gain a thorough understanding of the sub-nanometer drift you are investigating to accurately interpret the findings and establish the requirements for the setup. Any ideas for improving the stability of the adhesive connection that emerge during your research will be highly valued. If time permits, you may also have the opportunity to develop prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility and performance of your concepts.
Your Profile
To qualify for this internship, you should be:
- A Master's student with a background in mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field.
- A self-motivated, solution-oriented individual with strong communication skills and a proactive approach, ready to engage in hands-on glue experiments and analyses.
This internship is designed for five days a week, lasting between five to nine months. Please note that candidates must be enrolled in an educational institution for the entire duration of the internship.
