Desaltify.com works on a new energy-efficient desalination technology that has the potential to drastically reduce energy-consumption while making desalination more cost-efficient while lowering CAPEX and thus increase fresh water availability globally.

The company is an early stage startup, based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Dutch is not required/used as a team language.

Our patent-pending technology is different from reverse osmosis. It primarily uses a combination of electromagnetic fields. No membranes, no pressure. It is also different from capacitive de-ionisation, electrolysis or electrophoresis.

The technology (currently early lab stage) has potential applications in:

- Drinking water production at large scale;

- Industrial water production (for varying purposes including demineralised water for hydrogen production);

- Brine concentration for no-waste seasalt production and mineral recovery from waste water flows in mining and industrial water flows.

The company has applied to take part in the XPRIZE Global Water Scarcity Challenge, and the company roadmap for 2025-2026 is aimed to win that challenge.

About the role

We are looking for a Technical Co-Founder / Principal Engineer with a strong background in Electrical Engineering (preferably hydro-electrodynamics or related) and a keen interest in water technologies and everything electromagnetic.

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic and self-motivated about exploring new avenues and new approaches yet unproven. He/she has a deep understanding of electromagnetic field dynamics, has practical skills in hands-on development and testing of proof of concepts and prototypes, winding coils, etc. Is pragmatic and resourceful, from simple parts from existing machinery, and is excited about the opportunity to make a significant impact in a startup environment and a small team that dreams of clean water worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership : Manage and mentor a small team of engineers in the lab in an agile manner.
  • Improve the key technology : Improve the existing drawings, designs, blueprints and scientific theory, drawing upon your prior experience and practical and theoretical knowledge.
  • Create and improve documentation : ensure clear documentation, for new joining team members but also for early adopter clients. Provide input for further patent descriptions.
  • Drive Product Development : steering the direction of development (in sync with the CEO) on a daily basis. Contribute to the technical roadmap, and influence product direction.
  • Client Collaboration : Work with 'early adopter' partners to deliver solutions that meet immediate testing and usage needs.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics (systems/signals) from a reputable university. Preferably a PhD in a related field.
  • At least 3-4 years of experience in a lab environment (as PhD in a university setting, and/or in a corporate/startup setting), more is a bonus
  • Experience with electromagnetic fields and electromagnetic experimentation (frequency, voltage, amperage)
  • Experience with coil configurations
  • Preferably: experience in working with salt water in combination with the above (electrohydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics)
  • Bonus: startup experience
