Internship: De-orbit System Development

Humankind’s endeavor in space is evolving. The onset of commercial spaceflight introduces a myriad of opportunities in academia, governmental initiatives, and commercial interests. In consequence, there is a rapid increase in satellites being launched into Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). As a result, there is an exponential rise in debris endangering the functional satellites. So, there is an increasing need for de-orbiting LEO satellites to reduce space debris. A system to fulfill such a need is an inflatable structure that activates at the end-of-life (EOL) of a satellite to reduce its de-orbit time.

Wat ga je doen?

At DEMCON Delft you can perform an internship or thesis at higher professional (HBO) or academic level (WO) on various topics in the scope of developing a de-orbit system. Internships may range from engineering and prototyping to physics, pending on the availability of appropriate supervisors and topic definitions. All topics have in common that students will practice with tools from system engineering and gain experience in design of a space system.

Three examples of internship topics already performed:

- mechanical design and prototyping of the de-orbit system.
- Mission design, orbital mechanics, and structural analysis of the in-orbit dragsail.
- In-orbit thermodynamics in relation to inflatable structure internal pressure.

All internship topics in the scope of the de-orbit system contribute to a future sustainable and safer environment in LEO such that we can continue to explore space, the final frontier.

Wat breng je mee?

An internship duration of at least 6 months is preferential so that you can grasp, master, and contribute to a topic within the development of the de-orbit system.

Key requirements for working on the de-orbit topic are:
HBO/WO Aerospace engineering, Mechanical engineering, Applied physics.
- Strong analytical background.
- Experience or affinity with (at least) one of the following domains:Static/dynamic mechanical analysis.Pneumatics/aerodynamics.Thermodynamics.Orbital mechanics.Mathematics.System engineering.Materials engineering.Prototyping.
- Any software-related experience for the relevant domains (e.g., CAD/FEM, Python).

You will be guided on at least a weekly basis by an experienced engineer relevant to the topic. Together with your supervisor you can tailor the internship assignment. This way you will get a good impression on what life is like in our organization. Great work may yield a conference contribution as previous internships show.
