Within ASML Research we have two available assignments, and we are looking for two interns:
**Assignment 1 **is about Broadband Photonic Chip Coupling. In this internship you will carry out the theoretical and numerical investigations needed to develop innovative high-performance optical coupler schemes to feed broadband optical signals into photonic chips.

For this assignment, some of your tasks will include:

- Learn more about the properties and principles of operation of integrated optical components (e.g., optical waveguides, grating couplers, edge-couplers, etc.);
- Investigate the integrated-optics material platforms suitable for broadband operation over the visible optical spectrum;
- Using the available knowledge and employing state-of-the-art electromagnetic modeling tools available in ASML, design the schemes for high-performance broadband optical coupling in photonic chips;
- Assess the performance of your designs, accounting for physical phenomena such as material and structural dispersion, optical losses and even deviations in the design parameters caused by imperfections in the nanofabrication processes;
- Finally, estimate the feasibility of realizing and testing the proposed design according to the performance requirements and corresponding design parameters;

**Assignment 2 **is about Optical Spectrum Manipulation. This assignment entails the theoretical/numerical investigation and design of a photonic-chip-based system for manipulating the spectral content of a broadband optical signal.

For this assignment, some of your tasks will include:

- Learn more about the properties and principles of operation of integrated photonic components (e.g., optical waveguides, diffraction gratings, arrayed waveguide gratings, etc.);
- Investigate the various techniques available to manipulate the frequency spectrum of light in integrated photonic systems;
- Using this knowledge and employing state-of-the-art electromagnetic modeling tools available in ASML, design photonic structures to perform on-chip spectral decomposition and routing of a broadband optical signal;
- Assess the performance of your designs, accounting for physical phenomena such as material and structural dispersion, optical losses and even deviations in the design parameters caused by imperfections in the nanofabrication processes;
- Finally, estimate the feasibility of realizing and testing the proposed design according to the performance requirements and corresponding design parameters;

**Your profile**:
To be a match for this internship, you:

- Are busy with your master's in Optics or Applied Physics;
- Are skilled in tooling like MATLAB;
- Have knowledge about differential equations and Fourier analysis;
- Are solution oriented and have a hands-on mentality;
- Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

This is an apprentice/graduation internship for 5 days a week (3-4 days on-site) with a duration of minimum 6 months. The start date is as soon as possible.
