Barrier Resilience Internship

To protect the city of St. Petersburg from flooding, a storm surge barrier was constructed in 2011, named the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier. The barrier protects the city from storm surges caused by the Baltic Sea storms.

**What you do as an Intern**:
We are looking for a motivated intern with an interest in hydraulic engineering and numerical modelling. The assignment is to evaluate the wave-induced forces on the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier using a 3D numerical CoastalFOAM model. The numerical simulations are to be compared to the results of laboratory experiments that have been conducted in St. Petersburg. The measurement data is available for this study.

The aspects of interest are:

- Wave pattern around the construction (refraction, diffraction, and reflection)
- Wave-induced forces on the construction
- Overtopping
- Create a video to showcase the CoastalFOAM outcomes compared to the small-scale tests

**What you bring**:
**Requirements**:

- A MSc student, having a technical background. For example: Hydraulic Engineering specialization (e.g. Coastal Engineering) or Physics
- Interested in numerical modelling
- Experience with Matlab and/or Python
- Loves a challenge and does not get frustrated when things do not work the first time
- Likes to be part of a team and prefers the office environment above working from home
- Be a relatively sociable person who doesn’t mind to sometimes join one of our many social activities

This team consists of around 180 colleagues and is based in the Netherlands across three offices (Rotterdam, Amersfoort and Nijmegen). both private and (semi)governmental, with a range of services throughout the various phases of a project: from inception, through master planning, feasibility, design all the way to construction supervision. We have a strong foothold in the Netherlands but we operate worldwide.
