Research Internship in Driver Gaze Patterns

TNO is seeking a student to work on a research project focused on understanding driver gaze behavior. The primary goal is to relate gaze behavior to the traffic environment and anticipate future actions of other traffic participants.
What will be your role?You will be responsible for finding patterns in driver gaze behavior, which can provide insight into how humans scan the environment during driving and how this information gathering varies depending on the traffic environment and/or the mental state of the driver.
Focus scenarioThe focus scenario will be lane changes on highways, with a particular emphasis on mirror usage and looks-over-the-shoulder. The project aims to investigate whether drivers always scan their rear-view mirror first, followed by their side mirror and a look over the shoulder, or if this is dependent on the traffic situation or other factors.
Proposed approach- Literature review regarding driver gaze patterns and its modelling, including identification of literature gaps.
- Obtain and analyse gaze behavior, including blind spot and mirror usage, in available/obtained datasets.
- Develop a gaze behavior model based on highway driving gaze patterns using State-of-the-Art models.
You will work at the Integrated Vehicle Safety department of TNO on the Automotive Campus in Helmond. The department focuses on improving the safety of (future) automated driving vehicles by acquiring and analysing data from naturalistic road studies, test tracks, and driving simulator studies.
What we expect from youWe require that you are familiar with basic human factor concepts such as situational awareness and distraction. Knowledge of Matlab/Python or willingness to learn is also necessary. Knowledge about driver monitoring or gaze behavior is a plus.
