Project OverviewThe PhD student will work on a project focused on the development of bioinspired composites with enhanced mechanical properties. The project aims to replicate the internal structure of biological structural materials in synthetic composites, paving the way for new classes of structural and functional engineering components.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct research on the effect of the reinforcing architecture on the mechanical performance of bioinspired composites.
- Develop a multi-scale experimental approach to investigate the role of the microstructure on the failure mechanisms that affect the materials.
- Employ ceramic and polymer processing, combined with advanced materials characterization techniques, to succeed in this ambitious project.
- Talented and enthusiastic candidates with excellent analytical and communication skills holding a university degree (MSc, with high grades) in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering are encouraged to apply.
- A background and strong interest in Mechanics of Materials and Materials Science is required.
- Experience in materials processing and micromechanics is of benefit.
- Full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.
- Salary and benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (min. €2,872 max. €3,670).
- A year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%.
