Job Description

This is a 4-year paid PhD position at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and ASML. The position will be part of the Data and AI cluster, which studies foundations of data and AI for the present and the future. The research group focuses on designing new methods, developing algorithms and tools to expand the reach of databases and AI, and their generalization abilities. The PhD researcher will work on developing a framework that assists engineers in their diagnostics work, shortening the downtime of a system. The framework must be conversational and trustworthy, providing answers based on facts without hallucinations.

The PhD researcher will be supervised by Dr. J.M. Tomczak, Prof. M. Pechenizkiy, Prof. G. Fletcher, and Dr. J. Kustra. The researcher will work in close collaboration with the Diagnostics & Data Science Group in ASML Research. The team focuses on fundamentally exploring and prototyping the next generation knowledge-informed solutions for ASML, Metrology, and Lithography challenges. The researcher will participate in cutting-edge research, publish work in leading conferences and journals, and contribute to open-source tools.

The PhD researcher will have a BSc and MSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related field. The researcher should have a good statistical background, knowledge of probability theory, and understanding of Machine Learning and Deep Learning. The researcher should be proficient in Python and PyTorch/Jax. The researcher should be fluent in spoken and written English and have the ability to read scientific papers. The researcher should be able to work in an interdisciplinary team and be interested in collaborating with the industrial partner (ASML).

The conditions of employment include full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation after nine months. The researcher will spend 10% of their employment on teaching tasks. The salary and benefits will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P. The researcher will receive a year-end bonus of 8.3% and annual vacation pay of 8%. The researcher will have access to high-quality training programs and other support to grow into a self-aware, autonomous scientific researcher. The researcher will have an excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children's day care, and sports facilities. The researcher will receive an allowance for commuting, working from home, and internet costs. The researcher will have access to a Staff Immigration Team and a tax compensation scheme (the 30% facility) for international candidates.

Requirements

- BSc and MSc degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related field.
- Good statistical background and knowledge of probability theory, good understanding of Machine Learning and Deep Learning.
- Programming in Python and PyTorch/Jax.
- Fluent in spoken and written English, ideally demonstrated by tests (e.g., IELTS/TOEFL).
- Ability to read scientific papers.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and interested in collaborating with the industrial partner (ASML).
