Professor Hongjie Dai, a distinguished figure in the field of chemistry, has recently transitioned to HKU as a Chair Professor. His lab is seeking talented postdoctoral fellows and Ph.D. candidates to engage in pioneering research across various interdisciplinary domains, including materials chemistry and nanoscience, with applications in renewable energy, bioengineering, and nanomedicine.

Research Focus Areas:

1. Nanomaterials Development:

  • Creation of innovative nanomaterials across 0D (nanoparticles, quantum dots), 1D (wires and tubes), and 2D (sheets) with unique physical and catalytic characteristics.
  • Utilization of advanced spectroscopy and microscopy techniques for detailed characterization.

2. Renewable Energy Materials:

  • Electrocatalytic processes for water splitting, including seawater applications.
  • CO2 reduction strategies to generate high-value products with enhanced selectivity.
  • Development of new materials aimed at addressing environmental and energy challenges.
  • Innovations in rechargeable battery technologies, including Al-based and Li/Cl2 systems.
  • Exploration of non-flammable electrolytes, such as ionic liquids and solid-state solutions.

3. Nanomedicine and Bioengineering Initiatives:

  • Synthesis of novel dye molecules for advanced fluorescence imaging in the NIR-II/SWIR spectrum.
  • Fabrication of nanoparticles and nanocrystals for NIR-II/SWIR applications.
  • Engineering of genetically modified fluorescent proteins emitting in the NIR range.
  • Advancement of optical imaging methodologies integrating multi-photon detection techniques.
  • Molecular imaging studies in preclinical models of various diseases.
  • Investigation of immune responses to therapies and vaccinations through in vivo imaging.
  • Development of nanovaccines targeting cancer and infectious diseases.
  • Efforts towards clinical applications of NIR-II/SWIR imaging for various medical interventions.
