Job Title: Optical Engineer

Serco is seeking a skilled Optical Engineer to join our team at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands. As an Optical Engineer, you will play a key role in the development and enhancement of optical space instrumentation, providing expert technical support and ensuring precise engineering standards throughout all project phases.

Responsibilities:
  • Design and development of optical instruments and subsystems
  • Technical support to ESA projects and studies for the development of optical space instrumentation
  • Definition and review of all-optical system engineering aspects, including requirements, interfaces, and engineering budgets
  • Participation in project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals
  • Contribution to design and performance improvement of optical instruments
  • Development of mathematical models and simulations of optical instruments
  • Definition and follow-up of instrument on-ground test and calibration activities and of in-orbit commissioning
Requirements:
  • Master or PhD in Physics or Optical Engineering
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience in the design, engineering, and testing of optical instrumentation
  • Good working knowledge of ZEMAX and/or CODE V (and preferably also ASAP)
  • Hands-on experience in optical manufacturing techniques, alignment, and tolerancing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high degree of organizational and communication abilities
  • Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken
  • Knowledge of another EU member state language is an asset
