PhD Position in Advanced Load Control and Shedding Strategies for Low-Inertia Power Systems

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at TU Delft is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to work on a project focused on improving the resilience and frequency stability of power systems. The project aims to develop novel load control and shedding strategies to mitigate the impact of low-inertia power systems on frequency stability.
The PhD researcher will work under the supervision of Professor Peter Palensky and will be part of the Intelligent Electrical Power Grid (IEPG) group. The group focuses on the future of our power system, aiming to generate, transmit, and use electrical energy in a highly reliable, efficient, stable, clean, affordable, and safe way.
Research ObjectivesThe PhD researcher will be responsible for:
- Extensively studying and evaluating the impact of evolving generation and demand on the frequency stability of power systems
- Determining system needs and possibilities in terms of novel and advanced load control and shedding strategies
- Developing and comprehensively testing advanced algorithms to mitigate the challenges associated with low-inertia power systems
The ideal candidate should have:
- An MSc degree in a field with a strong emphasis on computer science, modelling, and algorithms
- Knowledge of the energy field is desirable
- Affinity with programming
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent English skills
The PhD researcher will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1.5-year contract with an official go/no-go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2.5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met.
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from € 2872 per month in the first year to € 3670 in the fourth year.
