Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage in a cutting-edge project that explores linguistic representations of gender in children's literature.

About the Project

The 'Tales and Tongues across Time' project aims to investigate how gender representation in language evolves over time in children's books. This study will analyze original Dutch books and translations from English and Scandinavian languages, focusing on linguistic elements such as pronouns, nouns, adjectives, and verbs. The researcher will apply distant reading methods to uncover changes in gender portrayal over time and in the process of translation and transcreation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct computational linguistic analysis on a large corpus of children's literature
  • Compile a comprehensive corpus of children's literature
  • Publish one single-authored, peer-reviewed article
  • Present intermediate research results at workshops and conferences
Requirements

Candidates must have a completed Master's degree in translation studies, linguistics, literary studies, or a related field. They should demonstrate excellent research skills, a strong cooperative attitude, and enthusiasm for communicating academic research to non-academic audiences. A good command of Dutch, English, and at least one other language (preferably Swedish or another Scandinavian language) is essential.

What We Offer

We offer a temporary employment contract for 48 months, with a salary range of €32,000-€42,000 gross per month (depending on experience). The employment contract includes a tuition fee waiver, free access to courses, and opportunities for further professional development and education. Our university is located in the heart of Amsterdam, offering an inspiring academic and international work environment.
