Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher positions to join our interdisciplinary research team in the field of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). The successful candidates will contribute to the development of a new theory on Human-Robot Bonding, which aims to improve the effectiveness of social robots in various contexts, including healthcare and education.

About the Project

The ERC Advanced Grant 'Understanding Human-Robot Bonding to Optimize Personal Support' (ROBOT-BOND) is a 5-year research project that focuses on developing and empirically validating a new theory on Human-Robot Bonding for longer-term interactions. The project aims to establish a bond between humans and robots, which is essential for effective use of social robots over longer periods.

Research Focus

The successful candidates will focus on specific areas of research, including:

  • Robot-assisted education for children with special needs
  • Robot companionship for disabled adults
  • Socio-affective relationships in therapeutic interventions for adolescents

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Researchers will be responsible for:

  • Conducting research in the field of Human-Robot Interaction
  • Collaborating with an interdisciplinary team of researchers
  • Developing and empirically validating a new theory on Human-Robot Bonding
  • Preparing active consent and participant information materials
  • Conducting studies to assess the theoretical constructs in the model
  • Writing research reports and publishing in leading international journals

Requirements

We are looking for highly motivated and experienced candidates who possess the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in a relevant field, such as Communication Science, Psychology, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Strong interest in advancing the social-psychological aspects of robots in society
  • Experience with empirical studies and research designs
  • Strong analytical skills, including advanced statistical and programming skills
  • Excellent academic writing skills

What We Offer

We offer a challenging position in a socially involved and highly interdisciplinary organization, allowing for a solid academic development to build your future career. The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, ranging from € 3,364 to € 6,378 per month, depending on experience and level of academic functioning. Yearly increases in salary will follow upon positive performance evaluations.

The appointment will initially be for 1 year, with the possibility of extension for a total duration of 2 to 4 years. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes to promote a good work-life balance, including an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus, contribution to commuting expenses, and a wide range of sports facilities.
