Job Description

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at TU Delft is seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to work on a project focused on improving emergency load control and shedding schemes for critical frequency conditions in low-inertia power systems.

The project aims to develop novel and advanced load control and shedding algorithms that can operate rapidly and effectively in low-inertia power systems and scenarios, contributing to arresting frequency deviations and ensuring system stability. The researcher will work closely with the project team to study and evaluate the impact of evolving generation and demand on frequency stability, analyze various operating scenarios, and develop advanced algorithms to mitigate challenges.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in computer science, modelling, and algorithms, with knowledge of the energy field being desirable. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as good English skills, are essential. The PhD researcher will be part of the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) group, which focuses on the future of our power system, integrating new power technologies and smart controls to generate, transmit, and use electrical energy in a reliable, efficient, stable, clean, affordable, and safe way.

Requirements
  • MSc degree in a field with a strong emphasis on computer science, modelling, and algorithms
  • Knowledge of the energy field is desirable
  • Affinity with programming
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent English skills
Conditions of Employment

The PhD researcher will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract and a progress assessment within 15 months. The salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €2872 per month in the first year to €3670 in the fourth year. The TU Delft offers a customizable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.

For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service, which provides information for new international employees to help them prepare the relocation and settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service also organizes events to expand the social network.

About the Department
