We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team at the University of Twente as a PhD candidate in Advanced Thermoplastic Composite Welding.

Overview

The Production Technology group is part of the Dutch National research program Aviation in Transition, and we have a unique opportunity for a PhD position on simulating novel assembly techniques for thermoplastic composites in T-joint configurations.

Thermoplastic composite materials offer improved toughness, recycling opportunities, and dustless assembly through welding compared to traditional thermoset composites. Our lab-scale T-joint welding set-up has led to significant advancements in this technology, and we now aim to develop process simulation tools to relate process parameters to T-joint performance.

About the Job

This PhD project focuses on developing a simulation model for the T-joint welding process, involving characterization of thermo-rheological properties, critical evaluation of the process and boundary conditions, and implementation of a thermo-mechanical finite element model with constitutive relations.

You will collaborate with other researchers and share results with industrial partners, working closely with our experienced team at the ThermoPlastic composite Research Center.

Requirements
  • A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent;
  • Experimental and theoretical skills in polymers and fiber-reinforced composites;
  • Experience with the finite element method and programming skills in scripting languages like Python or Matlab;
  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written (TOEFL > 90 or IELTS > 6.5 score).
