About this project

TNO is seeking a highly motivated graduate researcher to investigate the influence of specimen size on residual stress distribution in rails. The successful candidate will develop a method to predict residual stress distribution in full rails based on small specimen measurements.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct a literature review on residual stress measurement techniques and their application in rail structures
  • Develop numerical models to simulate residual stress distribution in rails
  • Design and conduct experiments to validate numerical models and propose an experimental method to overcome the problem of residual stress redistribution in small specimens

Requirements

  • Master's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field
  • Strong background in numerical modeling and steel structures
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Fluency in English and Dutch
