Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD candidate to join our research team at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL). The successful candidate will be working on a PhD project focused on palaeography and philology, with a specific emphasis on Brāhmī and Kharoṣṭhī scripts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducting in-depth research on palaeography and philology, with a focus on Brāhmī and Kharoṣṭhī scripts;
  • Collaborating with the research team to develop and implement research projects;
  • Writing and publishing research papers and articles in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Presenting research findings at international conferences and seminars;
  • Participating in the development of research proposals and grant applications;
  • Contributing to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students.
Requirements
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field, such as linguistics, philology, or a related field;
  • Demonstrable expertise in palaeography and philology, with a focus on Brāhmī and Kharoṣṭhī scripts;
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with colleagues and students;
  • Proficiency in English, with the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
Our Organisation

LUCL is one of seven Institutes that falls under the Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University. With over 120 linguists working at the Institute, it is a rich research environment that prides itself on fostering scientific excellence.

Terms and Conditions

We offer a fixed-term appointment of four years, with a gross monthly salary of €2,770 in the first year up to €3,539 gross per month in year four, based on full-time employment (pay scale P). The intended starting date is 1 November 2024. You are expected to work in Leiden.

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3%), training and career development. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

  • A copy of your MA thesis and any other publication in English that is representative for your research qualities.
