The Faculty of Archaeology at Universiteit Leiden is seeking a

PhD Researcher in the domain of Critical Field Archaeology Studies

to engage in a research initiative within the Faculty.

Project Overview
The Faculty of Archaeology is looking to appoint a full-time PhD researcher to explore the thematic convergence of Field Archaeology, educational methodologies, and ethical considerations. The selected candidate will become a member of the Field Research Education Centre and the Department of Archaeological Heritage and Society. The research endeavor is designed to culminate in a PhD degree within a four-year period (1.0 FTE).
Daily mentorship will be provided by Dr. Maaike de Waal, Assistant Professor and Head of the Field Research Education Centre.

The PhD researcher will contribute to the Field Research Education Centre (FREC), established in 2021 to serve as a Center of Expertise for fieldwork within the Faculty of Archaeology. This initiative emphasizes the critical role of fieldwork in heritage studies and the acquisition of archaeological data. The FREC operates at the nexus of education and research, focusing on enhancing the practical competencies of graduates and their career prospects in the archaeology sector through the coordination of field schools and internships.

The FREC's efforts are concentrated on addressing contemporary challenges in fieldwork, including:

  • Ethical guidelines for archaeological fieldwork;
  • Promoting inclusivity in fieldwork and internships;
  • Ensuring health and safety in archaeological projects;
  • Conducting research and training in diverse social, political, and cultural contexts;
  • Advancing sustainability in archaeological practices;
  • Developing innovative educational methods for fieldwork;
  • Connecting practical skills training with job market requirements;
  • Establishing effective fieldwork policies and procedures;
  • Implementing ethically responsible fieldwork techniques.

The successful candidate will be tasked with designing a pertinent research project linked to two or three of the aforementioned topics, under the guidance of Dr. de Waal and in collaboration with other FREC members, while contributing significantly to the FREC's overarching objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative and collaborative research in Critical Field Archaeology Studies;
  • Contribute to the FREC's mission;
  • Engage in research activities, including data collection, processing, and analysis;
  • Critically evaluate and analyze fieldwork meta-data;
  • Develop inclusive, sustainable, and ethically sound fieldwork practices;
  • Publish and present findings in international peer-reviewed journals and at academic and professional conferences;
  • Actively participate in faculty discussions on research innovation;
  • Complete PhD courses as per an individualized training and supervision plan;
  • Achieve a PhD by defending a dissertation composed of several articles published in peer-reviewed journals on relevant research topics within the designated timeframe.

Selection Criteria

  • A Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline completed by the appointment date;
  • Proven ability and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of conceptual and policy-oriented studies;
  • Experience in fieldwork focused on heritage studies and/or archaeological data collection;
  • A proactive and analytical research mindset;
  • Strong time-management, organizational, and communication skills;
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured and results-driven manner;
  • Willingness to travel for research purposes as necessary;
  • Proficiency in English is essential for the PhD thesis, while knowledge of Dutch is advantageous but not mandatory.

Employment Offer
The selected candidate will be appointed for a total duration of four years, starting with a one-year probationary period, followed by a three-year extension, in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

The remuneration aligns with the standard salary for PhD researchers in the Netherlands, as stipulated in the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (P scale: P0 to P3 = €2770 - €3539 gross monthly).

All PhD candidates are integrated into the Graduate School of Archaeology, which offers various training courses at different levels.

Commitment to Inclusivity
Promoting an inclusive community is a core value of Universiteit Leiden. The university strives to create an environment where all students and staff feel valued and respected, enabling them to reach their full potential. Diversity in experiences and perspectives enriches both teaching and research, contributing to high-quality education.

Application Process
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through the designated application portal. Applications must include a motivation letter, curriculum vitae, research proposal, writing sample, and contact information for two potential referees.

The initial round of interviews will be conducted online. Candidates should be prepared for availability during the interview week.
