The Faculty of Archaeology at Universiteit Leiden is seeking a

PhD Researcher specializing in Critical Field Archaeology

to engage in a comprehensive research initiative within the Faculty.

Project Overview
The Faculty of Archaeology at Universiteit Leiden is looking to appoint a full-time PhD researcher to explore the thematic crossroads of Field Archaeology, educational methodologies, and ethical considerations. The successful applicant will become a member of the Field Research Education Centre and the Department of Archaeological Heritage and Society. The research is designed to culminate in a PhD within a designated four-year period (1.0 FTE).
Daily mentorship will be provided by Dr. Maaike de Waal, Assistant Professor and Head of the Field Research Education Centre at the Faculty of Archaeology.

The PhD researcher will contribute to the objectives of the Field Research Education Centre (FREC), established in 2021 to serve as a Center of Expertise for fieldwork within the Faculty of Archaeology. This initiative emphasizes the critical role of fieldwork in heritage studies and the collection of archaeological data. The FREC operates at the nexus of education and research, focusing on enhancing the practical skills of graduates and their employability in the archaeology sector through coordinated field schools and internships both domestically and internationally. Consequently, FREC's efforts are directed towards addressing contemporary challenges in fieldwork, including:

  • Development of ethical guidelines for archaeological fieldwork;
  • Promoting inclusivity in fieldwork and internships;
  • Ensuring health and safety standards in archaeological projects;
  • Conducting research and training in diverse social, political, cultural, and legal contexts;
  • Advocating for sustainability in archaeological practices;
  • Innovating educational methods for fieldwork;
  • Bridging practical skills education with job market requirements;
  • Establishing comprehensive fieldwork policies and procedures;
  • Implementing innovative and ethically responsible fieldwork techniques.

The successful candidate will be tasked with designing a pertinent research project linked to two or three of the aforementioned topics, under the guidance of Dr. de Waal and in collaboration with fellow FREC members, while contributing significantly to the overarching goals of the FREC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative and collaborative research in Critical Field Archaeology;
  • Support the strategic objectives of the FREC;
  • Engage in research activities, including data collection, processing, and analysis to address research inquiries;
  • Collect and analyze fieldwork meta-data critically;
  • Contribute to the formulation of inclusive, sustainable, and ethically sound fieldwork practices;
  • Publish and present findings in international peer-reviewed journals and at academic and professional forums, both independently and collaboratively;
  • Actively engage in discussions regarding research innovation at the faculty, department, and FREC levels;
  • Participate in PhD courses as per an individualized training and supervision plan, including those offered by the Graduate School;
  • Achieve a PhD by defending a dissertation composed of several articles published in peer-reviewed journals on topics related to the outlined research themes within the stipulated four-year period.

Selection Criteria

  • A Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline by the time of appointment;
  • Proven enthusiasm and capability for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of conceptual and policy-oriented studies;
  • Experience in fieldwork focused on heritage studies and/or archaeological data collection;
  • A proactive and analytical research mindset;
  • Strong time-management, organizational, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured and results-driven manner;
  • Willingness to travel for research purposes as necessary;
  • Proficiency in English is essential for the PhD thesis, while knowledge of Dutch is advantageous but not mandatory.

What We Offer
The selected candidate will be appointed for a total of four years, starting with a one-year probation period, followed by a three-year extension, in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

The salary will align with the standard remuneration for PhD researchers in the Netherlands, as per the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities (P scale: P0 to P3 = €2770 - €3539 gross monthly).

All PhD candidates will be integrated into the Graduate School of Archaeology, which offers various training courses at different levels.
