Project Overview
The Faculty of Archaeology aims to appoint a full-time PhD researcher to explore the intersection of Field Archaeology, educational methodologies, and ethical considerations. The selected candidate will become a part of the Field Research Education Centre and the Department of Archaeological Heritage and Society. The research endeavor is expected to culminate in a PhD within a designated timeframe of four years (1.0 FTE).
Daily guidance will be provided by Dr. Maaike de Waal, Assistant Professor and Head of the Field Research Education Centre.

The PhD researcher will contribute to the objectives of the Field Research Education Centre (FREC), established in 2021 to serve as a hub for expertise in fieldwork, emphasizing its critical role in heritage studies and archaeological data collection. The FREC operates at the nexus of education and research, focusing on enhancing the practical skills of graduates and their employability in the archaeology sector through field schools and internships.

The FREC's recent initiatives have concentrated on addressing contemporary challenges in fieldwork, including:

  • Implementing ethically responsible fieldwork techniques in natural and archaeological settings.

The successful candidate will be tasked with designing a pertinent research project linked to two or three of the aforementioned themes, collaborating with FREC members, and contributing meaningfully to the Centre's overarching goals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct innovative and collaborative research in Critical Field Archaeology Studies;
  • Support the FREC's mission and objectives;
  • Engage in research activities, including data collection, processing, and analysis;

  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic and professional forums;
  • Participate actively in faculty discussions on research advancements;
  • Complete PhD courses as per an individualized training and supervision plan;
  • Attain a PhD by defending a dissertation comprising several articles published in peer-reviewed journals on related topics within the four-year period.

Qualifications

  • A Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related discipline by the time of appointment;
  • Proven enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of conceptual and policy-oriented studies;
  • Experience in fieldwork focused on heritage studies and archaeological data collection;
  • A proactive and analytical research mindset;
  • Strong organizational, time-management, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a structured and results-driven manner;
  • Willingness to travel for research purposes as needed;
  • Proficiency in English is essential for the PhD thesis, while knowledge of Dutch is advantageous but not mandatory.

Employment Offer
The selected candidate will be appointed for a total duration of four years, starting with a one-year probation period, followed by a three-year extension, in accordance with the applicable labor agreement for Dutch universities.

The remuneration aligns with the standard salary for PhD researchers in the Netherlands, following the labor agreement for Dutch universities (P scale: P0 to P3 = €2770 - €3539 gross monthly).

All PhD candidates will be integrated into the Graduate School of Archaeology, which offers various training courses at different levels.
