Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced researcher to join our team as a PhD Researcher in Environmental History. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting original research on the environmental impact of mining activities in southern Africa.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct archival research in Europe and southern Africa to gather historical data on mining activities.
  • Carry out field research in southern Africa to collect empirical data on the environmental impact of mining.
  • Use visual and digital methods to analyze and present research findings.
  • Submit regular reports and articles for publication in academic journals.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of research projects.
  • Collaborate with other researchers to co-author publications and present research at conferences.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the ASCL PhD programme and the Leiden University Humanities Graduate School.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, or a related field.
  • Demonstrable interest in environmental history and the impact of human activities on the environment.
  • Excellent research and analytical skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication and writing skills, with the ability to present research findings to academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Ability to read and speak German (for one of the positions).
  • English language proficiency: IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge Advanced Certificate.
