PhD Candidate in Environmental History

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our team at the African Studies Centre and Leiden University. The successful candidate will be part of a research project focused on the environmental history of mining sites in southern Africa.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct original research on the environmental impact of mining in southern Africa.
- Collect and analyze empirical data from field research in southern Africa.
- Conduct library and archival research in Europe and southern Africa.
- Participate in three periods of field research in southern Africa.
- Use visual and digital methods to analyze data.
- Submit monthly reports and blog posts on the project website.
- Submit a PhD thesis within four years and publish at least one peer-reviewed article.
- Attend meetings of the ASCL Graduate Programme African Studies.
- Comply with the rules and regulations of the ASCL PhD programme and the Leiden University Humanities Graduate School.
- Co-organize and participate in academic and public events.
- A master's degree with distinction in History, Anthropology, Archaeology, Sociology, Cultural Studies, or a relevant discipline.
- Demonstrable interest in history, mineral extraction, and environmental affairs.
- Ability to conduct archival and field research.
- Willingness to travel and relocate to the Netherlands.
- English language proficiency (IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge Advanced Certificate).
- Demonstrable fieldwork experience on the African continent.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- An enjoyable job in a socially relevant field.

- A salary of € 2872 - € 3670 gross per month.
