About the Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced PhD candidate to join our research team at the Universiteit Leiden. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative project that aims to explore the intersection of cultural heritage and environmental conservation in the Eastern Himalayas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent ethnographic research in and around Sikkim, India, focusing on the cultural expectations of ethnolinguistic minorities and their relationship with environmental conservation programs.
  • Develop and implement geospatial and multi-modal research methods to investigate the impact of heritage recognition on rural livelihoods and environmental conservation.
  • Collaborate with consortium members, including UNESCO, the Forest Department, WWF, and regional NGOs, to ensure the project's objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the production of educational materials, policy papers, and academic publications, including a PhD thesis and peer-reviewed journal articles.
  • Participate in project meetings, reading groups, and co-writing initiatives, as well as academic and public events.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Social Geography, or a related field.
  • Excellent skills in ethnographic research, with a strong background in qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Familiarity with India and its cultural context.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent command of English, with proficiency in Nepali, Lepcha, and/or Bhutia languages.
