Research Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team in the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science. The successful candidate will work on developing new machine learning approaches to challenging quantum problems, with a strong focus on making these approaches interpretable, reliable, and scalable.

The PhD researcher will be part of the Qa group, a team of faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and students across the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science, the Leiden Institute of Physics, the Leiden Institute for Chemistry, and the Leiden Mathematical Institute at the Leiden University.

The key responsibilities of the PhD researcher will include:

  • Conducting research on applications of machine learning in quantum sciences with scientific integrity and rigor.
  • Assisting in relevant teaching activities.
  • Actively participating in regular group and one-on-one meetings.
  • Co-supervising Bachelor or Master students.
  • Presenting research results to the scientific community at international conferences and through publications.

The ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in physics, computer science, or a closely related field, and a strong interest in machine learning and motivation to make it interpretable and reliable. Knowledge of quantum physics and numerical methods for quantum systems is preferred. Good programming skills in Python are also required, with familiarity with PyTorch or TensorFlow being a bonus.

The PhD researcher will be embedded in the Leiden University Graduate School of Science, which offers several PhD training courses at three levels: professional courses, skills training, and personal effectiveness. In addition, advanced courses to deepen scientific knowledge are offered by the research school.
