Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland AMOLF Voltijd
Project Overview

This PhD project focuses on optimizing light management in perovskite tandem solar cells to achieve high-efficiency solar cells. The project involves designing and optimizing metallo-dielectric back reflector geometries to scatter and redirect light in specially tailored ways, replacing surface texture on the Si cell and enhancing the cell efficiency.

In parallel, you will investigate specially tailored microstructures on the surface of the solar cell that preferentially scatter (far-)infrared spectral bands, creating effective passive radiative cooling and reducing the temperature of the solar cell under solar irradiation.

Research Environment

You will join a collaborative and supportive environment at the Photonic Materials group, led by Prof. Albert Polman, where you will work with an international team of PhD students, postdocs, and master students. The group is part of the AMOLF institute, which focuses on fundamental research on the physics of complex forms of matter and creating new functional materials.

As a PhD student, you will benefit from a variety of courses designed to enhance your research skills and participate in workshops with other PhD students from across the Netherlands. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with industrial and applied research partners to ensure that research outcomes are swiftly implemented in the solar PV industry.

Qualifications

We invite applications from highly motivated candidates with a strong background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering, and a keen interest in solar cells. Prospective PhD candidates must hold an MSc degree in physics or equivalent qualification.

Working Conditions
  • The position is intended as a full-time appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of four years.
  • The starting salary is 2.781 Euros gross per month, and a range of employment benefits are offered.
  • After successful completion of the PhD research, a PhD degree will be granted at a Dutch University.
  • Several courses are offered, specially developed for PhD students.
  • AMOLF assists any new foreign PhD student with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
