Background Information
In the Mechanical Development cluster, we are developing methods and means for systems simulations that reduce development time and costs associated with physical testing. Reduced order modeling, based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA), is the core technology of interest here. The reduction of radiation boundary conditions with moving components poses a challenging task, requiring consideration of parametrization, non-linearity, and view-factors between components. This internship aims to investigate and develop an accurate and efficient reduction technique for such problems.
Your Assignment
You will investigate and develop reduced order models for spatially varying radiation interfaces. This will involve:
- Identifying interfaces (inputs & outputs) of sub-systems, identifying physics, material models, and boundary conditions, preparing FEA models in Ansys/COMSOL, file parsing, and ROM creation in in-house tooling or Twin-Builder.
- Exporting ROM in MATLAB/Simulink and verifying it against the full order Finite Element Model (FEM).
- Providing a general way of working to perform reduction on multiple sub-components and connecting them.
- Writing a report to clearly state all the steps involved for future use of the ROM.
Your Profile
To be a perfect match for this internship, you:
- Are studying mechanical, aerospace, or civil engineering, or a related applied mathematics or physics field, with a specialization in computational mechanics.
- Are familiar with continuum mechanics of transient heat and coupled thermo-mechanics problems.
- Are familiar with classical numerical methods and linear algebra.
- Able to write scripts/functions in MATLAB, Simulink, and Python.
- Have good communication and writing skills.
- Are fluent in English.
- Know how to use Ansys (non-mandatory).
Other Requirements
You must meet the following requirements:
- You are available for 4-5 days a week and for a minimum duration of 6 months, starting as soon as possible.
- You are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.
- You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. If you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, please include in your CV/motivation letter your willingness to relocate.
