Position Overview

We are excited to offer a fully funded Ph.D. opportunity in the innovative domain of active soft matter, concentrating on the creation of artificial microswimmers that can navigate and transport autonomously in three-dimensional space. We seek a driven and inquisitive individual who thrives on conceptual exploration and is eager to engage in original research.

The ability of microorganisms to move, act, and transport within fluids is a defining characteristic of living systems. This has recently inspired a burgeoning research area known as 'active or autonomous matter,' which aims to engineer synthetic microswimmers endowed with remarkable abilities such as self-propulsion, self-assembly, and environmental responsiveness. However, the challenge remains in fabricating micron-sized artificial entities that can swim independently in three dimensions.

The main goal of this project is to establish a distinctive experimental model system that enhances our comprehension of the dynamic self-organization of microorganisms in 3D, utilizing advanced optical microscopy techniques. Ultimately, this research aims to deepen our fundamental insights into the dynamic self-organization of microorganisms in three dimensions and to inform the development of crucial design principles, paving the way for the creation of intelligent micromachines for various technological and biomedical applications, including targeted cargo transport, environmental sensing, fluid mixing, reconfigurable materials, and active mass transport in catalysis.

Candidate Profile

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in applied Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, or a related field is essential. Candidates with an MS or MSc in Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering are also encouraged to apply, provided their Master's thesis is relevant to soft matter.
  • Prior experimental experience, particularly with optical microscopy techniques and colloidal particle synthesis, is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency or demonstrated practical experience in programming languages such as Python, ImageJ, and/or MATLAB is highly desirable.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English are required.
