Postdoctoral Researcher in Electrolyzer Plant Design

Hydrogen is poised to play a crucial role in achieving climate neutrality for hard-to-abate sectors. Currently, producing hydrogen via water electrolysis is economically unviable due to high investment costs, low efficiencies, and high operational expenses related to electricity input. In contrast, the regulatory framework mandates future electrolyzer projects to operate in tandem with nearby renewable electricity production, necessitating dynamic operation of the electrolyzer plant.
In this research project, we aim to reduce the cost of green hydrogen produced via water electrolysis by developing improved operational and design decision support methods tailored for prospective electrolyzer plant owners. These innovative approaches enable better operational decisions (e.g., market positioning, asset ramp-up/down strategies, and thermal management) as well as design choices (e.g., electrolyzer stack configuration and connection).
Research Objectives
- Develop state-of-the-art optimization models to capture technical limitations of the electrolyzer plant, stacks, and downstream process, as well as associated costs.
- Model the interaction with electricity and ancillary services markets.
- Account for the impact of prevailing regulatory requirements, such as the Delegated Act on RFNBO's.
Collaboration and Supervision
You will work under the supervision of Kenneth Bruninx and Mar Perez-Fortes. You will join a vibrant community of internationally renowned interdisciplinary energy researchers in the Department of Engineering Systems and Services at TU Delft. Our faculty hosts a diverse group of people from different countries and disciplines, and we welcome candidates who contribute to and appreciate this diversity.
Requirements- PhD degree in science, engineering, or economics (must have been awarded by the agreed-upon starting date).
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
- Result-oriented attitude.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English (Dutch is not required).
- Prior research experience in energy system/market modeling or other energy-related research.
- Prior research experience in electrolysis-based plants modeling, techno-economic assessment, and heat management.
