About the Role

Serco is seeking a highly skilled Applications Engineer to join our team at the European Space Agency's European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) in the Netherlands. As an Applications Engineer, you will play a key role in the implementation of the Space Solutions Programme, focusing on the development and promotion of space-based applications and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Service Identification and Characterization: Identify and characterize new services and applications that exploit current and next-generation space systems, and integrate them into non-space domains.
  • Technical and Operational Assessment: Assess the technical and operational requirements applicable to space-based applications and their integration with terrestrial solutions to support the identified services and applications in an end-to-end context.
  • Proposal Evaluation: Evaluate industrial proposals for the development and implementation of space-based applications and services.
  • Industry Collaboration: Collaborate with industry, operators, application providers, and user communities to develop, validate, and promote the utilization of space-based assets.
  • Methodology Development: Develop and implement methodologies and tools for assessing the end-to-end performance of multimedia applications.
  • Business and Regulatory Analysis: Analyze and assess the business and regulatory aspects associated with the launch and commercial operations of satellite-based applications and services.
Requirements
  • A Master's Degree in Engineering from a relevant domain.
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience, including experience in the space industry (NewSpace industry is a plus).
  • Sound knowledge of the overall space applications market, and specific experience in specifying, developing, evaluating, and promoting applications making use of satellites.
  • Significant experience in satellite and possibly terrestrial systems requirements analysis, design, implementation, and operations, and associated management experience.
  • Familiarity with downstream space services and applications, and with relevant space technologies (i.e., satellite communications, navigation, and earth observation) is an asset.
  • Good business acumen is an asset.
  • Experience in the evaluation of proposals.
  • Experience with space (application) project feasibility studies.
  • Knowledge of ESA and in particular various TIA space applications and ESA S2 programs is considered an asset.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • High standard of document drafting.
  • Comfortable with working in a diverse and multinational team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are needed, together with a high degree of organizational and communication abilities.
  • Proficient in the English language, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of another EU member state language is an asset.
  • Candidates must hold an EU passport.
