Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our team at the Institute of Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic research team working on the intersection of trade, climate, and environmental policy.

The PhD research will focus on the impact of trade on land use changes and the environment. The candidate will work on enhancing the land use model GLOBIOM and linking it with macro-economic models to better capture the impacts of trade between regions on the land use sector and the environment.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in environmental economics, trade policy, and sustainability studies. Experience with quantitative research methodologies, including mathematical programming and scenario modelling, is highly desirable. The candidate should also have excellent communication and organisational skills.

The PhD position is part of the Horizon Europe ENhanced understanding of Trade Impacts on Climate, industries, and the Environment (ENTICE) project. The project aims to develop novel data and modelling capacity to enhance our knowledge and inform policymakers on the positive and negative impacts of trade and trade policy on climate and the environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct cutting-edge research on the impact of trade on land use changes and the environment.
  • Enhance the land use model GLOBIOM and link it with macro-economic models.
  • Process data, analyse results, and implement a range of scenarios on more sustainable trade agreements.
  • Carry out case-studies, mixing quantitative and qualitative methods to understand the impact on land use changes and the environment at a more fine-grained level.
Requirements
  • University master's degree in environmental economics, trade policy, or a related field.
  • Experience with or interest in quantitative research methodologies, including mathematical programming and scenario modelling.
  • Experience with data and spatial analysis and processing, preferably in R or QGIS.
  • Experience with (or willingness to learn) qualitative data gathering and analysis.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
