Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Twente. The successful candidate will be part of the NANOSPRESSO-NL consortium, a multidisciplinary team working on the development of novel microfluidic devices for the production of high-quality and affordable nucleic acid nanomedicines.

Research Focus

The PhD project will focus on the fundamental understanding of microfluidic lipid nanoparticle formation. The candidate will design and fabricate microfluidic chips and develop experimental techniques to study the fluid mechanics and physicochemistry of LNP self-assembly. The ultimate goal is to develop a deep understanding of the underlying mechanisms and to design microfluidic devices that can be tailored to specific needs in terms of LNP size distribution and therapeutic loading.

Responsibilities
  • Design and fabricate microfluidic chips
  • Develop experimental techniques to study LNP self-assembly
  • Conduct numerical simulations and theory to test understanding
  • Closely collaborate with the Laboratory for Clinical Chemistry & Hematology of the University Medical Center Utrecht and other consortium partners
Requirements
  • Strong background in physical chemistry, (applied) physics, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Enthusiasm and motivation to do a PhD
  • Strong communication skills, including fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experimental experience and creativity in the lab
  • Knowledge on fluid mechanics, microfluidics, microscopy, image and data analysis, and/or physical chemistry is a plus
