About This Opportunity


TNO is seeking a Business Developer to drive innovation in shallow subsurface and groundwater management. As a key player in geosciences, TNO has extensive knowledge of the subsurface, which is crucial for understanding and managing this vital resource.


Groundwater is a critical component of water supply, agriculture, ecosystem preservation, subsidence, and climate adaptation strategies. With increasing challenges like climate change, the energy transition, urbanization, and resource scarcity, sustainable groundwater management has never been more pressing. Our research addresses critical areas such as groundwater protection, sustainable extraction, aquifer management & recharge, and the impacts of geo-energy, land subsidence, and climate change on water resources.


We collaborate with various partners, including government agencies, industry stakeholders, and research institutions, to develop solutions that ensure the sustainable use of groundwater resources for future generations.


Your Key Responsibilities



  • Developing business opportunities: Identifying and establishing new collaborations, joint projects, and multi-year research programs focused on sustainable sub-surface and groundwater management.
  • Creating an innovation roadmap together with relevant research groups.
  • Driving strategic partnerships: Expanding TNO's key accounts and developing long-term relationships with government agencies, water authorities, knowledge institutes, and private sector partners.
  • Strengthening innovation ecosystems: Building and nurturing an innovation ecosystem around groundwater research.
  • Supporting research and development: Collaborating with TNO's groundwater scientists and experts from other departments (AI, Digital twins etc.) to translate cutting-edge research into practical solutions addressing real-world challenges.
  • Promoting sustainable practices: Advocating for sustainable groundwater use and promoting its integration into broader environmental policies and energy systems.

What We're Looking For


To succeed in this role, you'll need:



  • A university degree in hydrogeology, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, geosciences, or a related field.
  • Five to ten years of experience in a strategic commercial role with a proven track record in business-to-business project development and public-private partnerships.
  • Industry knowledge: A deep understanding of groundwater management, including technical and regulatory aspects, and an established network within the Netherlands' groundwater management, environmental consulting, geotechnical consulting, or related sectors.
  • Innovation focus: Ability to develop and sell new propositions, with a strong affinity for R&D and technology-driven solutions in groundwater management.
  • Eager to work closely with experts in the team to help them bring their ideas to market.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Dutch.

Compensation and Benefits


The estimated salary for this position is between €55,000 and €75,000 per year, based on your knowledge and experience. You'll also receive 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33%, and a flexible budget. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to attend courses, workshops, and conferences, and receive training and coaching based on your needs.
