Senior Safety Officer

HKU is seeking a highly skilled Senior Safety Officer to join our team. As a key member of our Safety Office, you will play a crucial role in reviewing research projects and advising stakeholders on biological safety.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Review research projects and provide expert advice on biological safety
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive inspection/audit programme of laboratories and other facilities
  • Provide advice to users and departments on biological and GM safety matters
  • Review biological and GM risk assessments, applications for animal work involving chemical risks, and health surveillance requirements
  • Provide emergency response to laboratory incidents and accidents, conduct incident and accident investigations, and prepare accident/incident reports
Requirements:
  • Master's degree or PhD in Life Sciences
  • At least 5 years' experience in conducting laboratory-based research, including experimental design
  • Sufficient familiarity with GMM's or GMO's to conduct safety assessments of research proposals involving them
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently in a variety of settings
  • Ability to deal confidentially with sensitive information concerning research plans and other matters
