Position Overview
The University of Hong Kong invites applications for the role of Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in Strategic Communication/Data, Digital and AI in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (2 posts) . This appointment is on a three-year fixed-term basis, with potential for renewal and consideration for tenure upon completion of a second fixed-term contract. The rank of the appointment will be determined based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidates. Exceptional candidates at the Professor or Associate Professor level may be considered for direct tenure, subject to the University’s approval.
About the Journalism and Media Studies Centre
Established in 1999, the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) at the University of Hong Kong has been at the forefront of professional journalism education in Asia. Our dedicated faculty and support staff are committed to enhancing professional standards and promoting journalistic integrity through innovative teaching, impactful research, and collaborations with leading global media organizations. The JMSC curriculum is tailored to prepare graduates for diverse roles in local, regional, and international media.
Candidate Requirements
Applicants should hold a PhD in Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, Information Sciences, or related fields. The successful candidates will contribute to various domains related to strategic communication and/or data, digital, and AI within the Centre, while also fostering skill development among staff and students. Teaching responsibilities will include subjects such as strategic communication principles, pervasive communication, digital media and society, digital media analytics, and AI applications in media. A strong publication record and success in securing competitive research funding are essential. Experience in designing and leading strategic communication programs or in philanthropic fundraising will be advantageous, as will the ability to create tangible impacts through research.
Roles and Responsibilities
For Post (A), the appointee will be tasked with designing, overseeing, and coordinating a new concentration in strategic communication, alongside developing academic research initiatives in digital media and strategic communication. Candidates should have expertise in areas such as advertising and digital marketing, strategic and marketing communication, public relations, or cyberpsychology.
For Post (B), the appointee will support the establishment of the new concentration in strategic communication. This role requires a robust research background in cutting-edge digital communication studies, with expertise in areas such as media or multimodal data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, or advanced computational methods in communication research.
Compensation and Benefits
A competitive salary will be offered, commensurate with qualifications and experience, along with annual leave and medical benefits. Current tax rates do not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment includes a contract-end gratuity and contributions to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of the basic salary. Housing benefits may also be provided as applicable.
