PhD Researcher in Architectural History and Heritage Studies

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The successful candidate will be part of a research project examining the built environment and heritage formation in Indonesia around independence.
Project OverviewThe project, 'Concrete Colonialism: Architecture and Heritage in Indonesia around Independence', employs a material lens to investigate the local and transregional networks of fabrication, production, distribution, use, and decay of building materials, with a specific focus on concrete.
Research Objectives- Examine the manufacturing and distribution of concrete, including the activities of companies such as the Nederlands-Indische Portland Cement Maatschappij.
- Research the perception of concrete in relation to colonialism and independence, possibly in relation to other building materials.
- Investigate local, regional, or transnational exchanges of building materials, knowledge of building construction, or labor through a comparative study.
- Conduct research and submit a PhD thesis within the period of appointment.
- Publish 2 single-authored, peer-reviewed articles or chapters.
- Present intermediate research results at workshops and conferences in the Netherlands and abroad.
- Organise project workshops, conferences, and creative events with project team members.
- Participate in the AHM and Faculty of Humanities PhD training programmes.
- (Co-)teach in BA programmes, optional in years 2 and 3 of the PhD project.
- A completed Master's degree in the History of Architecture, Heritage Studies, or a related Humanities discipline.
- Research skills demonstrated by a Master's thesis and the capacity to develop a track record of publishing monographs, edited volumes, or in academic journals.
- A strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research.
- Interest in communicating academic research to non-academic audiences.
- Good command of English.
- A temporary employment contract for 48 months, with a first contract for 16 months and an extension for the following 32 months, contingent on a positive performance evaluation within the first 12 months.
- A salary in the first year of the employment contract €2, and in the last year a maximum of €3, gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours.
- PhD candidates receive a tuition fee waiver.
