PhD Researcher in Laser Micro-Printing of Electronic Materials

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at the University of Twente. The successful candidate will work on laser-based manufacturing techniques for integrated electronic and photonic circuits within the framework of a large Dutch project, titled 'Groeifonds NXTGEN HIGHTECH'. This project aims to develop groundbreaking developments in next-generation high-tech equipment to support growth and development of important Dutch high-tech sectors.

The Background

Complex electronic and photonic circuits require advanced methods for connecting these circuits to the outside world. Laser-based methods can help print finer structuring required for bonding and assembly of these chips. Laser-induced forward transfer (LIFT) is an innovative Additive Manufacturing process that transfers a small volume of a thin donor film to a substrate via a laser beam.

Your Challenge

During chip bonding, the dimensions and properties of the bond and conductive structures depend greatly on the properties of the metallic solder and soldering method used. However, for integration of different chips in a system, the density of these contacts is crucial for the overall system footprint and cost. The laser's ability to focus energy in a small volume enables transferring solder materials with higher precision and possibly improved material properties, while being a contactless method not requiring a cleanroom atmosphere.

Project Overview

In this project, you will investigate novel methods for laser-assisted soldering of circuit elements to improve the assembly of heterogeneous systems of electronic and photonic chips. You will develop a setup to enable laser-assisted transfer and analyze printed materials at the Chair of Laser Processing, contributing to the use of these materials in real integrated circuit systems to decrease feature sizes. This work will be carried out as a collaboration with knowledge institutes and companies within the consortium.

Your Profile

  • You have a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Photonics, Electrical or Materials Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Good knowledge of fundamental aspects of laser-material processing. Applied knowledge in laser micromachining is an advantage.
  • Experience in using a range of technologies/techniques for surface characterization, e.g. SEM, EDX, AFM, etc., would be an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment and undertake experimental research.
  • Good knowledge/demonstrated awareness of (numerical) modeling.
  • Excellent analysis skills and an analytical mindset, as well as excellent communication skills, including written.
  • English language proficiency. If you have not graduated in a country where English is the first language, then you will need to demonstrate your English proficiency by having passed IELTS or TOEFL. The minimum overall score for IELTS is at least 6.5 with no component being below 5.5.

  • A starting salary of € 2.770,- gross per month in the first year and increasing to € 3.539,- gross per month in the fourth year.
