Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Voltijd

Department Overview
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in collaboration with ARCNL and the Institute of Physics (IoP) of the University of Amsterdam, is seeking three group leaders with a focus on either experimental or theoretical modeling.

Your Role

In partnership with the Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL), we are launching a new round of our esteemed MacGillavry Fellowship and Lovelace Fellowship programmes. We invite female researchers who align with the ARCNL research agenda and aspire to leadership roles as (assistant/associate/full) professors at either university to consider this opportunity.

For further details, please refer to the respective webpages of the MacGillavry and Lovelace Fellowship programmes.

ARCNL represents a distinctive public-private collaboration between Dutch universities and ASML, a leader in the semiconductor industry. As a national research center under the Dutch Research Council (NWO), ARCNL specializes in fundamental physics and chemistry relevant to (nano)lithography technologies. With three departments—Materials, (EUV) Source, and Metrology—ARCNL employs around 100 individuals.

We are looking for three group leaders who will engage in research alongside other teams within ARCNL. As a group leader, you will be affiliated with either the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam or the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, with appointments at the assistant or associate professor level based on your qualifications. Exceptional candidates may be considered for a Full Professor role. Notably, working at ARCNL entails a reduced teaching load compared to standard university positions.

ARCNL addresses challenges posed by ASML, including the generation of 13.5 nm radiation from laser-produced plasmas, the development of advanced metrology techniques, and material research focusing on tribology and surface reactivity. Your research will contribute significantly to the advancement of high-volume production methods for semiconductor components.

We welcome diverse research expertise and seek energetic, productive researchers who thrive in collaborative environments, leading to impactful scientific contributions and innovative results for ASML.

Research Facilities
Your group will have access to all ARCNL facilities, with potential resources from ASML. Local and national computational resources are available at the Amsterdam Science Park, and essential infrastructure is shared with the neighboring institute AMOLF, including clean room facilities.

Diversity and Inclusion
We value diversity as a cornerstone of our organization’s quality. We actively seek talent from varied backgrounds and experiences and are committed to fostering an inclusive community. We encourage applications from individuals who resonate with this ethos, even if they do not meet every requirement.

Support and Resources
We provide a comprehensive support package, including competitive start-up funds, a budget for two junior researchers, and access to cutting-edge facilities. Technical assistance will be available from dedicated technicians and support departments.

Candidate Profile
We invite applications from candidates who possess:

  • A PhD in physics, chemistry, or materials science;
  • Experience and a proven scientific record in atomic, molecular, plasma, or instrumental physics;
  • A willingness to teach at the university level and demonstrated teaching skills;
  • Experience in supervising BSc, MSc, and/or PhD students is preferred;
  • The ability to secure external funding;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Proficiency in English and a willingness to learn Dutch;
  • Experience with collaborations between industry and academia is advantageous.

Compensation
Salary will be determined in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, reflecting experience and qualifications. It will range from a minimum to a maximum based on the level of appointment. Additional benefits include holiday allowances and end-of-year bonuses.

About ARCNL
The Advanced Research Center for Nanolithography (ARCNL) focuses on the fundamental physics and chemistry essential for current and future technologies in nanolithography, primarily for the semiconductor sector. As a public-private partnership, ARCNL collaborates with several universities and ASML, employing around 100 scientists and support staff.

About the University Departments
The Institute of Physics (IoP) at the University of Amsterdam is dedicated to conducting outstanding research in experimental and theoretical physics, housing over 70 faculty and 240 researchers. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers an active intellectual community and focuses on various research themes.

Application Process
Interested candidates should submit their applications through the designated application form, including a motivation letter, research statement, resume, publication list, and references. A knowledge security check may be part of the selection process.

Commitment to Diversity
Both ARCNL and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam are dedicated to creating inclusive environments that embrace diversity in all forms. We encourage applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
