We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at the Universiteit Utrecht. The successful candidate will be part of the epidemiology group in the department of Population Health Sciences, led by Professor Arjan Stegeman.
The PhD project will focus on the animal side of the dual burden of zoonotic diseases in Europe. The researcher will estimate production losses of zoonotic diseases in animals and possible tangible and intangible costs. This will involve developing a framework for the estimation of the dual burden of zoonoses in the EU and EEA/EFTA countries.
About the ProjectThe project aims to develop a methodology for estimating the societal burden of zoonotic diseases. This will involve combining the DALY approach for human disease burden with the estimated monetary losses due to zoonotic diseases in animals. The researcher will work closely with the international research project on "Burden of Zoonoses in EU and EEA/EFTA countries".
About the TeamThe epidemiology group is an international team of more than 20 employees with expertise in modelling infectious diseases, evidence-based veterinary medicine, surveillance, economics of animal health and field and experimental epidemiology. We prioritize collaboration, ongoing feedback, and both professional and personal development.
Requirements- Master's degree in a relevant field (animal health economics, veterinary epidemiology, One Health, computational biology)
- Affinity with zoonoses and livestock production in the European context
- Full proficiency in English, both written and oral
- Good communication and collaboration skills
- A position for one year, which will be extended with three years upon satisfactory performance
- A working week of 36 to 40 hours and a gross monthly salary between €2,872 and €3,670 in the case of full-time employment
- 8% holiday pay and 8.3% year-end bonus
- A pension scheme, partially paid parental leave and flexible terms of employment
