PhD Position: Burden of Zoonoses in Europe

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team at Universiteit Utrecht. The successful candidate will work on a project focused on quantifying the dual burden of zoonotic diseases in Europe, with a specific emphasis on the animal side of this burden.
The project aims to develop a framework for estimating the dual burden of zoonoses in the EU and EEA/EFTA countries. This will involve estimating zDALYs (disease-adjusted life years) and economic costs not considered in zDALYs. The focus will be on nine foodborne zoonoses: campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis, listeriosis, infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC), zoonotic tuberculosis, brucellosis, trichinellosis, echinococcosis, and yersiniosis.
About the RoleWe are looking for a candidate with a Master's degree and affinity for quantitative research, such as (animal) health economics, veterinary epidemiology, One Health, and computational biology. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in zoonoses and familiarity with livestock production in the European context. Full proficiency in English is a prerequisite, and good communication and collaboration skills are essential for this interdisciplinary and international project.
About the TeamThe epidemiology group at Universiteit Utrecht is an international team of over 20 employees with expertise in modelling infectious diseases, evidence-based veterinary medicine, surveillance, economics of animal health, and field and experimental epidemiology. We prioritize collaboration, ongoing feedback, and both professional and personal development.
What We OfferWe offer a position for one year, which will be extended with three years upon satisfactory performance. The working week is 36 to 40 hours, and the gross monthly salary is between €2,872 and €3,670 in the case of full-time employment. We also offer 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, a pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible terms of employment.
