PhD Position in Biomedical Optics: Revolutionizing Cancer Diagnosis

Project Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our team at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, working on a groundbreaking project to revolutionize cancer diagnosis using Immuno-OCT technology. This innovative approach combines Optical Coherence Tomography with simultaneous detection of fluorescence by labeled molecules, offering a 10 to 100-fold better resolution than current imaging techniques.

The successful candidate will be part of a team of at least three PhD students working on different aspects of the project, including optical system development, novel catheter designs, data processing algorithms, and modeling of scattering and polarization properties of tissue. The project's results will be presented at national and international medical and technical conferences and in relevant journals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop advanced imaging systems and fluorescence detection methods
  • Design and optimize optical systems for Immuno-OCT
  • Contribute to the development of image processing methods based on physical principles of light scattering and polarization
  • Collaborate with the research team to achieve project goals
Requirements
  • Master's degree in (applied) physics or a related field
  • Strong interest in biomedical optics and imaging
  • Excellent experimental skills or theoretical physics background with analytical skills
  • Good knowledge of optics and ability to communicate in English
