At Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, we are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join our team at the Integrated Research on Energy, Environment and Society group (IREES) within the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen (ESRIG).

We are looking for a PhD candidate who is passionate about energy and sustainability scientific problems with a focus on the critical material perspective. The successful candidate will be under supervision of Prof. Xin Sun and work collaboratively with colleagues in the IREES group.

The clean energy technologies, such as solar & wind power and electric vehicles, are preferable from a decarbonization perspective. However, their deployment causes a surging demand of critical materials, leading to concerns about high supply concentration, negative environmental and social impacts, by-product issues, geopolitical instability, and other unsustainable factors.

In this context, the proposed PhD project focuses on demand management solutions to mitigate the critical material impacts of the energy transition. Potential topics include modeling dynamic demand for critical materials in multiple energy decarbonization and transportation electrification scenarios, identifying technological and societal factors driving changes in demand patterns, and developing integrated approaches minimizing critical material needs and environmental footprints.

This project involves methodologies such as dynamic material flow analysis, life cycle assessment, integrated assessment models, system dynamics, big data analysis, and design of new approaches for specific themes. The PhD learning experience includes multidisciplinary data analysis, modeling, empirical research, teamwork, high-impact writing, visual and oral presentation, networking, and career development.

We expect you to have a MSc degree in a relevant Science or Engineering discipline, proficiency in English, strong team player skills, general data collection, modeling, analytics, and programming skills, knowledge of artificial intelligence methods, and desirable expertise in critical materials, energy transition, climate change, or related topics.

As a Research Scientist at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, you can expect:

  • A salary of approximately €2,770 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of €3,539 gross per month in the fourth and final year for a full-time working week.
  • A full-time position (1.0 FTE) with a four-year contract.
  • A holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income and an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance.
