PhD Positions: Mechano-Catalytic Depolymerisation of Plastic Waste

We are seeking two PhD candidates to contribute to the development of sustainable plastic recycling technologies through mechano-catalytic conversion. This project aims to pioneer the conversion of polyolefins into essential chemical building blocks, such as monomers, using ball milling.
The successful candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with an expanding team of PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers. They will have the opportunity to develop new recycling technologies for plastics, using their expertise in catalysis, polymer science, and/or mechano-chemistry.
Key Responsibilities- Develop the fundamental relationship between reaction rate and ball milling parameters;
- Overcome the challenge of conducting spectroscopic measurements in the ball mill;
- Develop novel surface-activated mechano-catalysts;
- Understand the fundamental mechanism of surface-activated mechano-catalysis for polymer chain cleavage.
- MSc degree in chemistry or chemical engineering;
- Motivation to contribute to solving the plastic waste issue;
- Strong interest in heterogeneous catalysis, spectroscopy, mechano-chemistry, and/or polymer chemistry;
- Collaborative and enthusiastic team player with good English communication skills;
- Hands-on experience in using or building chemical setups in the lab environment;
- Ability to work independently in a multidisciplinary environment.

- Full-time working week and a gross monthly salary between €2,872 and €3,670;
