Freelance Satellite System Engineer - 12 month Contract

Based in South Holland, Netherlands | Hybrid | Full-time

communication payload systems
that enable faster, more reliable data transfer between satellites and ground stations. Their mission is to turn advanced research into scalable industrial products shaping the future of secure, high-speed space communication.

Your Role

As a
System Engineer / System Architect
, you will bridge the gap between concept and product. You'll lead the
technical system design
of their communication terminals and subsystems — from requirements and architecture through to verification and industrialisation. You'll work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams (optics, mechanics, electronics, control, and software) to translate customer needs into elegant, manufacturable solutions.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define and own system architecture and functional decomposition.
  • Lead technical trade-offs between optical, mechanical, and electronic subsystems.
  • Drive design reviews and risk-based decision-making.
  • Support customer discussions, requirements capture, and verification planning.
  • Collaborate with project management to ensure cost, quality, and schedule alignment.
  • Coach engineers and nurture a systems-thinking mindset across teams.

About You

  • MSc or PhD in Systems, Aerospace, Mechanical, or Optical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 5+ years' experience in system architecture or multidisciplinary design in
    space and satellites.
  • Experience taking high-tech products from prototype to industrial production.
  • Entrepreneurial, hands-on, and comfortable making decisive technical calls.
  • Excellent communicator — able to connect with suppliers, partners, and customers.
