About this position
The performance of the adhesive layer (bond line) in a ceramic multi-layer armour system is a critical component in determining single- and multi-hit ballistic protection. Adhesive layer research in ballistic armour is limited, especially when considering the impact of substrate surface (pre)treatment on ballistic performance. Not only are the cleaning/degreasing steps critical in adhesive/ballistic performance, but controlled surface modifications can also improve the armour stopping power. These modifications take the form of chemical (e.g., laser treated, re-firing, or silane treatment) or morphological (e.g., laser treatment, nanostructuring, or grit blasting) treatments which improve bonding strength and ballistic protection of the system.
What will be your role?
The impact of these surface pretreatment processes on ballistic protection is not fully understood and has yet to be explored for current adhesives utilised in multi-layer armour systems. This project will investigate, in collaboration and under guidance from TNO, the optimal surface preparation techniques for adhesive bonding of a ceramic front plate (silicon carbide) to a backing plate (fibre-glass composite and steel), for adhesives currently utilised in armour systems. The adhesive bond strength will be carefully characterised before ballistic performance characterisation at TNO state-of-the-art ballistic test facilities.
What we expect from you
You are in the final stages of your masters degree in physics, mechanical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of material science, surface manipulation/characterisation or adhesive bond lines. You have experience in conducting experimental research and are focused on conducting reproducible research. The ability to communicate your research internally and externally is valued.
