SOMO is seeking a project manager to strengthen our Project Management Unit. The main focus of this team is supporting SOMO’s strategic projects to ensure they are well designed, run smoothly and are impactful. In close cooperation with the Finance team, the Unit is responsible for enabling organisational oversight on the progress on projects, making recommendations to SOMO’s management team and project leaders to improve projects, and ensuring that the impact of projects is monitored and reported to SOMO’s donors. Furthermore, the Unit makes sure that projects are sufficiently resourced and is responsible for overseeing sub-grants to project partners, where relevant. The Unit also facilitates project development and fundraising.

The majority of SOMO’s staff work from our Amsterdam office, and collaborate with partners across all regions of the world.

Structure
SOMO is organised in several expertise teams: Project Management (of which you will be a part), Climate Justice, Commodities and Sustainable Chains, Tax and Economic Justice, Corporate Research, Advocacy and Networks, Communications, Operations, and Management. SOMO also coordinates and participates in several national and international civil society networks.
Job description and purpose
SOMO is looking for an experienced project manager with strong interpersonal skills. You have expertise in managing multiple projects supported by different donors and in collaboration with civil society partners worldwide. As project manager, you will be managing a portfolio of several projects, donors and sub-grants. You will be facilitating the annual project planning and budgeting, and are responsible for monitoring implementation throughout the year. You will make sure that the organisation is adhering to its internal policies and procedures, and complies with donor requirements. In this role, you must be willing and comfortable to ask difficult questions and kindly nudge and support colleagues to implement their projects in a strategic and efficient way. You are a hands-on professional who is happy to take on work and does not shy away from administrative tasks. You will thrive in a non-hierarchical, democratic organisation with a strong team ethos.
Main responsibilities
Support proposal coordination for grant applications; Project management (lead & support role alongside research project leader); Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning on organisational and project level; Quality control of relevant policies and procedures, ensuring they are up to date and in line with donor requirements; Management of partner grants, including due diligence; Comply with donor requirements (e.g. reporting) and maintain relation with donors.
Key skills and experience
Excellent project management skills, with a strong track record in managing multiple projects; At least three years’ experience working at the international level, managing grants and donor agreements, preferably for a not-for-profit organisation; Experienced in drafting narrative reports to donors and sub-grant contracts; Experience working with project management systems and able to quickly familiarise with new software (SOMO works with ProjectConnect); Good understanding of budgeting, budget monitoring and financial reporting; Excellent verbal and writing skills in English, other languages are an asset; A strong team player with outstanding organising, interpersonal and intercultural skills.

An exciting and challenging position within an Amsterdam-based NGO with a large national and international network; An informal and dynamic work environment with the opportunity to undertake new initiatives; We initially offer a one-year contract of 28-32 hours a week (0.7-0.8 FTE), with the intention to make the contract permanent after this year, depending on available resources; A gross monthly salary between €3,750 and €5,039 based on 40 hours a week, depending on experience; Good benefits including paid leave, holidays, a good pension, and additional end of year bonus payment dependent on SOMO’s annual organisational and financial results; Good professional schooling and development possibilities; You will be working in our beautifully located office in Amsterdam (KNSM-eiland).
