About this position
Safety and security cannot be taken for granted. Sometimes, you have to fight for peace. There is always a frontline somewhere, where history is being written. The impact on our armed forces of rising tensions around the world, especially the ongoing struggle over Ukraine, is huge. The knowledge and technology needs of our founding partner, the Dutch Ministry of Defence, are evolving and changing more quickly, the pace is accelerating, and research and development budgets are growing fast. By extension, the focus on our national (homeland) security is also intensifying, for instance in the fight against worsening drug-related crime in the Netherlands. This is where knowledge and technology make the difference, and we translate that into our mission In order to remain efficient and agile and to better serve our clients, the Defence, Safety & Security (DSS) unit will be divided into five divisions, under which the research groups have been organised. The change will go into effect on 1 January . During the redesign of the DSS unit, 23 new groups were created from the original 15 research groups by splitting off and/or merging parts of research groups. We are looking for a Research Manager for the Autonomous Systems & Robotics research group. Autonomous Systems & Robotics designs and builds surveillance and combat management systems and robotics for the armed forces and security professionals. With a team of around 45 enthusiastic researchers and engineers, we use our knowledge of multi-agent systems, system architectures, software engineering, information fusion, and adaptive planning (AI) algorithms to successfully execute a wide range of cross-domain projects. This work almost always involves other departments and areas of expertise, from sensor technology to human factors, and from academics to operational professionals. This makes our work dynamic and varied. That’s why we are characterised by an application-oriented and system-integrating approach. We focus on complex, adaptive systems for observation and decision-making in varying degrees of collaboration with human beings. As a result, we’ve become a highly versatile, indispensable link in many multidisciplinary projects.
What will be your role?
As Research Manager, you’ll lead the research group, together with a highly experienced deputy RM. The group is based in The Hague and currently comprises 45 professionals (around 50 by the end of ).
You’ll ensure that the DSS unit’s strategy is translated into a challenging and inspiring vision for the research group. You’ll be responsible for aligning the knowledge and capacity of the research group with short- and long-term market requirements. One of your main objectives will be to manage and develop a high-quality and innovative technology portfolio.
You’ll stimulate your team members in their personal and professional development. You’ll ensure optimum capacity and project planning that maximises employee talent and knowledge development. You’ll maintain existing contacts and develop new ones at universities.
You’ll ensure the healthy financial management of the research group. You’ll be responsible for project deliverables. You’ll monitor the progress of projects and make timely adjustments where necessary.
You’ll report to the Division Director and, together with your fellow Research Managers, the Market Manager, and the Science & Technology Manager, you’ll form the division’s management team, under the leadership of the Division Director.
What we expect from you
Knowledge of or affinity with the Autonomous Systems & Robotics research group’s areas of expertise and/or relevant domain knowledge (of defence) are essential to link content and process and fill the position effectively. You have a background that fits well with the department, allowing you to participate in discussions on content. You have experience with proposition development and know how to valorise conceptual knowledge into products and practical applications (B2B, B2G). Management experience and experience with the above work in a complex environment are also important .
You’re able to manage a team of system and software engineers, architects, PMs, researchers, and consultants. You can interact well with highly skilled technical staff from different disciplines. You’re a people manager and a connector.
You are and feel responsible for the proper functioning of the research group, the division, and the DSS unit as a whole. You can see the big picture and lead the group in an inspiring ambition.
You proactively develop initiatives to strengthen collaboration, while ensuring the development and social cohesion of the research group’s employees, and making sure that the group’s foundations (financial, order book, quality of knowledge) are and remain in order.
You take the initiative and enjoy achieving results. You’re a skilled communicator, networker, and connector who gets things done. You strike the right balance between tenacity and flexibility, and between a client focus/service orientation and operational clout.
You’re able to expertly analyse complex situations and you can plan, organise, and prioritise work effectively.
