Are you a life science researcher who is looking for a change in career direction? Safety Office is building a new team of senior safety officers to review research projects and advise stakeholders on biological safety. The team will play a key role in a programme of laboratory safety inspections led by the Assistant Director. This is an exciting opportunity to constructively engage with and support a wide range of University research. We are looking for suitable candidates with relevant background and experience for this role to identify risks and suggest solutions that enable researchers to safely achieve their research objectives. 

Applicants should have a Master’s degree or PhD in Life Sciences and have accumulated at least 5 years' experience in conducting laboratory-based research, including experimental design. Sufficient familiarity with GMM’s or GMO’s to conduct safety assessments of research proposals involving them is required. They should have good communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work independently in a variety of settings. The ability to deal confidentially with sensitive information concerning research plans and other matters is essential. Proficiency in Cantonese and Putonghua will be an advantage. Candidates with prior laboratory safety experience and/or predominantly research experience seeking a change in career direction are welcome to apply.

The successful candidates will work with the Assistant Director in developing and implementing a comprehensive inspection/audit programme of laboratories and other facilities. He/She will also provide advice to users and departments on biological and GM safety matters on a routine basis; review biological and GM risk assessments, review applications for animal work involving chemical risks, advise on health surveillance requirements, provide emergency response to laboratory incident and accident; conduct incident and accident investigations; prepare accident/incident reports; and compile related statistics. Training on all matters relating to biological safety and safety management systems, including risk assessment, hierarchy of controls and regulatory requirements will be provided.
