The Chair of Hindu Spirituality and Society at the Faculty of Religion and Theology at Vrije University Amsterdam is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated researcher to conduct research in the field of Hindu spirituality, integrative spiritual care, and their intersection. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the growing understanding of spiritual care within the diverse context of Hinduism, while working in a prestigious academic setting.

Spiritual care in the contemporary Hindu living traditions is provided in formal, informal as well as non-formal ways. For many decades Hinduism infused spiritual movements spread out across the globe catering to a diverse international audience with several programs aiming spiritual well-being, support and guidance through teachings, spiritual disciplines and techniques. Although their programs are not institutionalised as spiritual care, their impact may resemble formal institutionalised spiritual care support and guidance. Since Hinduism does not have one single authority, but instead invites diverse and pluralistic expressions in the search for spiritual well-being the Hindu context is a rich lab for studying spiritual care practices and beliefs.

In this particular context divers refers to the existence of differences within the group of Hindus in the diaspora living in the Netherlands and in other parts of Europe while pluralistic refers to the acceptance and celebration of these differences in the Hindu community within the Netherlands as well as other parts of Europe. In this research we envision developing an integrative approach to spiritual care by learning from different Hindu practices and beliefs provided by spiritual movements. The research encompasses empirical research using a mixed method approach consisting of qualitative as well as quantitative research methods and techniques. Under the guidance of the supervisors the researcher will work on developing this research further.

Your duties Conduct empirical research on the concept of spiritual care within Hinduism by using an integrative lens, with a focus on its application in the Netherlands. Explore relevant texts, traditions within Hinduism for developing a theoretical framework for Integrative Spiritual Care. Collect and analyse best practices to test and further develop the theoretical framework by focusing on the effectiveness and impact of Integrative Spiritual Care practices within Hindu communities and spiritual movements. Collaborate with healthcare professionals, spiritual caregivers, and Hindu communities and spiritual movements to gain insights into their perceptions and experiences of Integrative Spiritual Care. Develop and implement research methodologies, including interviews, surveys, and case studies, to gather relevant data. Producing scientific output(s), which may consist of articles published in and submitted to peer-reviewed journals as well as material in the form of a book to be used in Hindu Spiritual Care Education Collaborate with the Chair of Hindu Spirituality and Society to support with research material for teaching in the Hindu spiritual care program (for Postmasters as well as Postacademic courses) (Optional) Acquiring didactic skills under the responsibility of a teacher by giving lectures in the Hindu Spiritual Care Program and bachelor courses (max. 20% of the appointment), with the aim of obtaining the BKO-certificate

Requirements

A completed master's in Hindu studies, Theology or Religious Studies or in a related relevant field such as in Social Sciences or Humanities or a Post masters in Spiritual Care. Knowledge and understanding of Hindu spirituality, texts, traditions, beliefs, and practices. Familiarity with the concepts and principles of spiritual care and their application in different settings. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills. Demonstrable experience or affinity with scientific research; Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a research team (listening, flexible, adaptive, proactive). Ability to operate in a pluralistic and multi-religious context and to contribute to relevant discussions. Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and deliver high-quality research outcomes. Good organisational and communication skills; Strong verbal and written communication skills in Dutch and English

What are we offering?

A challenging position in a socially involved organization. On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,226 (scale 10)
and a maximum €5,090 (scale 10), depending on your education and experience. 

The initial employment contract will affect a period of 1 year and can be extended to a total of 4 years.
