BackgroundSince the 1970s, Caribbean reefs have transitioned from coral-dominated to algal-dominated ecosystems. The prevalence of algae reduces coral recruitment, rendering the reefs unable to recover from additional disturbances and jeopardizing crucial ecosystem services, including coastal protection, fisheries, and tourism. One of the main factors to the proliferation of algae is the scarcity of grazers, which is a result of overfishing and disease outbreaks.
In collaboration with local and international partners, Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences is conducting multiple projects around the theme of reef restoration, specifically the use of grazers to remove algae and restore coral reef resilience. Species of interest are for example the long-spined sea urchin () West Indian sea egg (Tripneustes ventricosus), and the West Indian top shell (Cittarium pica). In the Saba Research Center, research into larvae culture, settlement and grow-out of these species is conducted, while planned mesocosm facilities make it possible to ex-situ study species interactions.
Position
The life support manager will ensure installation and operation of life support systems at the Saba Research Center, including filtration systems, water quality monitoring, and equipment maintenance. The life support manager will work closely with the other staff to provide optimal conditions for the health and well-being of all nursery installations.
Tasks include, but are not limited to:
Design, installation, and maintenance of life support systems (micro-algae, larvae systems, settlement tanks, grow-out systems, flow through, filtration, etc). Develop and implement protocols to keep life support systems running smoothly. Care taking of the different life stages of grazers. Coordinate and monitor lab activities (space use, material use, cleaning, inventory, order consumables) Assist with setting-up experiments in the lab. Contribute to other VHL research on Saba. Supervise intern students. Outreach activities (for example lab tours).
We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate with a BSc or MSc degree in marine biology or a related field. Saba provides a unique working environment that requires adaptability to weather, differing cultural norms, and limited on site resources. You should be able to plan well, work independently, have strong communication skills and the attitude to participate successfully in an international and multidisciplinary team.
Requirements:
BSc or MSc level in marine biology, aquaculture, or related field. Basic aquaculture or aquarium experience. Experience with marine organism husbandry. Knowledge of water quality, filtration, and marine organisms care requirements Familiarity with plumbing, carpentry and basic wiring knowledge. Willingness to live in a small island community. Good English level, both written and spoken.
Any of the following could be considered an advantage and should be mentioned in the motivation letter:
Experience with the culture of sea urchins or corals Research experience. Certified Scuba diver.
We offer:
A challenging job opportunity in the field of grazer restoration. The salary (depending on education and experience) is a minimum €3.018,24 and a maximum of €4.582,91 gross per month for a fulltime position (in accordance with scale 8 or 9 cao-hbo, scale depends on knowledge and experience).Starting date: between 1 July and 1 September 2024.
This is a fulltime position for 40 hours per week.
